Why your boiler's warranty might already be void
29 Aug 2026
Almost every boiler manufacturer's warranty in the UK contains a clause that gets skipped in the excitement of a working heating system: annual servicing, and any gas work at all, has to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, or the warranty is void. Not "may be affected" — void, from that point onward, regardless of what actually goes wrong later.
It's not a technicality designed to catch people out. Gas work is one of the few trades in the UK where using an unregistered person isn't just inadvisable, it's illegal — the Gas Safe Register exists specifically because badly connected gas appliances kill people, not just void paperwork. A registered engineer carries an ID card with their registration number and the exact type of gas work they're qualified for; checking it takes about ten seconds and costs nothing.
The frustrating part is how invisible this is until it matters. A boiler fixed by someone unregistered can run perfectly well for years. The problem only surfaces the day it breaks down properly and the manufacturer asks for the service history — or worse, if something goes wrong with the gas connection itself, where the margin for error is exactly zero.
If a quote for boiler or gas work comes in noticeably cheaper than everyone else's, the registration is the first thing worth confirming, not the last.
